New research from Cooperative Insurance found that 31 per cent of first time home buyers (or nearly 1 out of 3) bought furniture before they measured the rooms of their new property.
The study went on to detail that out of this group, almost a quarter experienced a “nightmare” while getting their furnishings into the property; and another 7 per cent damaged their property during their struggle to move in.
My daughter experienced the same thing when she first bought a house. She was so excited to buy new furniture for her new house. So when the time to move came, they had a hard time moving in since the couches and beds were too large for the rooms.
Difficulty in logistics isn’t the only problem that you’ll encounter if you buy furniture too early in the game.
Trent Hamm from The Simple Dollar also reminds first time home buyers to postpone the furniture shopping, because the money you’ll spend on furniture can be used for a better purpose as new homeowners.
Before buyers can go into full-blown shopping mode, Hamm says that they should first figure out their entire budget and the basic furniture that they’ll need for the house. This initial step is usually forgotten due to the excitement of buying a house – and this excitement can cloud our judgment from the reality of impending costs that comes with owning a house.
This doesn’t mean you are prevented from buying furniture totally, though. Just take your time to look around thrift stores or even Craigslist for good quality, second hand furniture.
Don’t feel bad that you have empty rooms when you first move in – you can always upgrade the look of your house anytime, adds Hamm. Save the money for more important expenses in the meantime, then buy the furniture that what you want when expenses aren’t tight anymore.
Here are other helpful tips from ApartmentTherapy.com, which can help you get over the urge of buying new furniture for your new house:
Don’t reject the hand me downs
When people hear the news about your new house most of them would gift you with their old furniture. Expect these gifts to be a little beaten down, but don’t throw them out immediately.
Examine these hand me downs very closely and make a list of inexpensive repairs that you can do to make these furniture usable again!
Embrace the imperfections of your first house
Embrace the fact that your first house will not be perfect. You will have clashing furniture and even broken down appliances all the time. Don’t pity yourself because everybody goes through them! It’s also helpful to live with these imperfections rather than finding a solution for it immediately, since the time spent on waiting can help lead you to a cheaper and simpler solution.
